Inclusive Mindset in Practice: How to Boost the Engagement of People with Disabilities – a Community-Led Event by Skilly

Inclusivity and accessibility are increasingly familiar terms, but for many people they still only mean physical accessibility. A truly inclusive community requires much more: people having autism, hearing or visual impairments may have different needs that also must be taken into consideration and met when organizing various activities. The Skilly team created two training formats within this Community-Led Event in order to strengthen the inclusive mindset in the NGO Academy community.

With the support of the NGO Academy Community-Led Events programme, Skilly, a Hungarian NGO and expert on the employment of people with disabilities, held a Hungarian in-person training in May and an online international training in June. Through sharing good practices and developing creative ideas, the event provided space to reflect on what can be done to make the programmes, events and activities of the participating organizations more inclusive and accessible. The concept of universal design when planning an event can be applied the same way when constructing a building. If the needs of all participants are considered from the beginning, then ensuring accessibility and inclusion will be much more successful. For the international event participants came from 7 countries in total, from Austria to Moldova.

The members and team of Skilly are truly grateful to have created and implemented these special training sessions in partnership with the NGO Academy and for contributing to a more diverse, inclusive and accessible society for all in the Eastern and Central European region.
